In the process of coming up with the idea for my slab pot, I wanted to make a pot that resembled an object from real life that could incorporate a puzzle cut in its appearance. I had multiple candidates, but in the end I chose to make a candle, with the wax drippings forming the outline of the cut. The main subtractive relief that I carved into my pot were the diagonal ridges in the candle, and I added additional detail in the shape of more drops of wax.
The main goal of my slab pot was to depict a candle in the form of a pot with a lid. I feel like I have accomplished this goal, since my pot is shaped like a candle.
I did run into a few problems while making the pot, however. The bottom of the pot cracking during the bisque fire, and I think it was because the sides had dried out a little by the time I attached the bottom, so when the bottom shrank it wasn’t large enough to completely cover the base of the pot. Still, I was extremely pleased with the end result of my pot, since I was able to mend the base with glaze.
