The song I chose for my sculptural response project was “Deadstar” by Muse. The song and its lyrics give off a very agitated and angry emotion.
To express this emotion in my mask, I put emphasis on the eyebrows and mouth. I made sure to crinkle the nose and angle the eyebrows. I made the eyebrows larger than what is considered to be the normal proportion, and I angled the sides of the mouth down.
My goal was to make a mask that resembled a person and had most of the facial proportions accurate, not including the emphasized parts of the face. I wanted to make my face slightly realistic, and I feel I accomplished my goal.
This was the first time I depicted a human face through clay, so it was a very interesting experience. Before I started, I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to manage to make hair, but I just played around with the clay and I was satisfied with the results.
